Gardening in the community

On Saturday 17th June some of our gardening club met at Wokingham Hospital where we transformed the two raised beds in Ascot ward. Morrisons and Wyevale Garden centre at Winnersh kindly donated bedding plants and we dug over the beds and weeded before putting in the new flowers.

Schools Gardening Competition.

Cllr Peter Lucy, Town Mayor, writes " it was a great pleasure to judge this year's schools gardening competition.  On Tuesday 5th July Paul Smith, Amenities Officer and I visited seven local schools.  The standard was very high, and making a selection was not easy.  Indeed we had joint first prizes in both categories.

I noted the enthusiasm of all pupils; the dedication of the staff, many of whom took on this role as an additional duty; the work and support of parents, the funds raised to start a garden or vegetable area; how many schools also used the produce they grew; the many schools that made use of wooded outdoors as well as specific flower and vegetable plots; and of course how much the pupils learned from and enjoyed the activities.

My heartfelt thanks to all those schools taking part, we very much welcome your support and look forward to next year".

Hawthorns was awarded with a Silver Award. Well done to Mrs Mckay and the gardening club.
